Man commits suicide after killing wife, children

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Chandpur

A man strangled his wife, tied her body to a pole next to a pond, killed his children and then committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling yesterday. The tragedy occurred at Sarderbari in Debpur village under Chandpur Sadar Upazila around 4am on Monday. The deceased were identified as Mynuddin, 33, his wife Fatema Begum, 24, their two small children, Mithila Farzana ,5, and Siyam, 1. Mynuddin used to work as manager in a factory in Chittagong, said his mother, Feroza Begum. Confirming the news, police super Jihadul Kabir, assistant police super Chandpur Circle Jahid Parvez Chowdhury and OC of Sadar Model Police Station Mohammad Nasim told The Independent that primary investigation indicated that marital discord might have led to the tragedy.

A distraught Feroza Begum and her another son, Kalam, said that at 4 am on Monday Mynuddin in his Facebook status informed his elder brother Jashimuddin , working in Malyasia, that he was dying and requested him to inform his mother Feroza Begum to prepare for his burial. Feroza Begum and Kalam had rushed to Mynuddin’s house. They were thunderstruck to see the bodies of the two children lying on the bed under a quilt and Mynuddin hanging from the ceiling.

Hearing their cries, neighbours rushed to the spot. After a search, Fatema’s body was found floating, tied to a pole in the adjacent pond. Police suspect Fatema had been poisoned to death. ASP Circle Jahid Parvez Chowdhury and OC Sadar Model Police Station Md Nasim along with forces reached the spot.

They sent the bodies to the Chandpur General Hospital for post mortem. Police Super Jihadul Kabir also visited the spot. A pall of gloom descended on the village following the incident.
