The students of Islamic History and Culture department of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia yesterday formed a human chain protesting an attack on the department's Professor M Emtaz Hossain on Wednesday. Around 500 students of the department formed the human chain in front of Mrittunjoye Mujib in the campus around 11:00 am. On December 12, three people, led by deputy registrar of the university Manjar-e-Alam Miru went to the residence of Professor Emtaz Hossain on the campus and assaulted him, leaving him injured. Later, the professor filed a case with IU Police Station accusing the university official. Following the incident, the university authorities suspended the deputy registrar on that day.
On December 13, the university authorities formed a three-member probe body, headed by the chairman of Tourism and Hospitality Management department Professor M Mahbubul Arefin, to investigate into the matter.
While addressing the human chain, the students condemned the incident and demanded Manzar-e-Alam Miru's permanent expulsion from the university. The students, later, submitted a four-point memorandum to Vice-chancellor Professor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari seeking immediate arrest of the attackers, permanent expulsion of Miru, restriction on the entry of outsiders to the campus as well as to take necessary steps as any more teacher to be assaulted in the future.
