Railway employees denied affordable medical facility

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Chandpur
Railway employees denied affordable medical facility

The Chandpur Railway Hospital and Maternity Clinic has been lying in a damaged and abandoned state after being hit by Cyclone Sidr on 15 November, 2007. As this was the only hospital and maternity clinic for railway employees in the district town, they and their family members do not receive affordable medical facilities on time anymore. Now, railway employees have to depend on private medical practitioners. Otherwise, they have to visit Laksham, an area that is 50 kilometres away from Chandpur Sadar.

Around 500 railway officers and employees are currently working in Chandpur, said Zila Railway Sramik League president Mahbubur Rahman.

"We informed the matter to the authorities concerned, but no action has been taken in this regard," he added.

The bricks of the damaged hospital building are being stolen.

The building has become a safe haven for drug addicts. The northern and eastern sides of the hospital premises  are also  being  eaten up by a big waterbody, where tilapia fish and other varieties are being cultivated.

The approach road to the hospital has become very narrow due to lack of proper repairs over the years. Some veteran railway employees told The Independent that the hospital was fully operational before the disaster. They urged the authorities to take steps to rebuild the hospital.
