A late hour golden touch of Belfort steered Abahani Limited to secure the semifinal berth defeating Saif Sporting Club by a solitary goal in the Walton Independence Cup Football Tournament yesterday.

Held at the Bangabndhu National Stadium in the day’s lone match the Haitian forward Belfort struck the all important goal of the match on 81st minute.

Abahani Limited did some struggle in their group leg matches to manage the quarterfinal place after a hard working 2-1 win over Muktijoddha and a goalless draw with Brothers Union.

On the other hands Saif Sporting saw more tough time to survive the group stage with managing a solitary goal win against Team BJMC and suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Arambagh KS.

In the slow starting match both the sides looked a bit cautious to play with offensive attitude and looked as almost a boring encounter up to half an hour mark but surprisingly the scenario changed a lot with Abahani wriggling their way to break the deadlock on 32nd minute.

The Federation Cup champions produced the first attack down the left with Waly Faisal released a lofted cross inside the area and Sunday took a close range volley but Saif keeper was on the line and saved the strong effort successfully.

Saif sounded well in the very next minute to make a strong reply in the very next minute with a quick counter attack when their South Korean forward Seugil set a beautiful cross in an open space inside the box but Miraz Hoaasin despite rapidly rushed, failed to connect the ball to capitalise the golden opportunity.

After the goalless first half, the match got full pace with attacks from both ends and this time Saif drew the first blood inside five minute when Jafar Iqbal went into the box with the ball but finally lack of confidence he crossed the ball rather than to shot the ball into near post.

Abahani generated another sparkling attack through the right wing and earned free kick some five yards away to the box and Belfort downed the ball with chest but Sunday failed just to touch the ball from less than a hand-shaking distance from the goal line on 64th minute.

Abahani ultimately celebrated the victory when Belfort was lucky to touch the ball to send into near post when all credits should go to Sunday who took a powerful header on Sohel Rana’s left side cross (1-0).
