JICA team meets DU vice-chancellor

A three-member delegation, led by Yasuhiro Kawazoe, Senior Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman at the latter’s office of the university.

Other team members of JICA were Koji Mitomori and Alimul Hasan. Treasurer of DU Prof Md Kamal Uddin and Professor of the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering Dr Subrata Kumar Aditya were present on this occasion.

During the meeting the Vice-Chancellor stressed the need for undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programmes among DU and other renowned universities across the world to produce skilled human resources at the university.

They discussed the possibilities of establishment of a new project titled ‘Bangladesh-Japan Interdisciplinary Institute” at DU with the financial assistance form JICA.

The Vice-Chancellor said joint collaborative academic and research programmes have been conducted by the Dhaka University and different universities in Japan for long time.

He sought cooperation and help from JICA to strengthen these ongoing collaborative programmes. JICA Representatives assured the VC of providing all possible support and cooperation in this regard.

JU Journalists’ Association polls on Dec 18

The election to elect the executive body of Jahangirnagar University Journalists’ Association (JUJA) for the 2019 session will be held on December 18.

The Chief Election Commissioner and the Dean of Social Sciences Faculty Prof Rasheda Akhter told The Independent yesterday. The polls will begin at 10am and will continue till 1pm on December 18, while the result of the election will be announced within 2pm on that day, he said.

Earlier, the decision of election came up at the annual general meeting of the organisation on December 12 at its office room in JU TSC. JUJA Adviser Professor Bashir Ahmed was present at the general meeting as the chief guest while JUJA President Nur Alam Himel presided over the programme.

Pro-AL panel sweeps IUTA polls

The ruling Awami League-backed teachers’ panel swept all the 15 executive posts in Islamic University Teachers’ Association (IUTA) on Wednesday.

Prof M Kamal Uddin of Statistics Department and Prof M Alamgir Hossain Bhuiyan of Economics Department were elected as the president and general secretary respectively from the pro-AL teachers’ panel Bangabandhu Parisad and Shapla Forum.

Prof AHM Aktarul Islam Zillu was elected as vice-president while Prof M Jahangir Hossain as joint secretary and Prof M Mamunur Rahman as treasurer.

The elected executive members are—Prof M Mahbubar Rahman, Prof M Zakaria Rahman, Prof M Mahbubul Arefin, Prof M Anowar Hossain, Prof M Maher Ali, Prof Shahadath Hossain Azad, Prof Tapon Kumar Zoddar, Prof M Rezwanul Islam, Prof M Mizanur and Joyosree Sen. A total of 350 teachers, out of 406, cast their votes.
