Oikya Front gets nod for Sylhet rally

Newly-formed alliance staging drama over programme, alleges Quader
Staff Reporter

Jatiya Oikya Front, the newly-floated alliance of BNP and several other parties, yesterday got a nod from the authorities concerned to hold a rally in Sylhet tomorrow. "Oikyafront has been given permission for its rally," Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Golam Kibria told UNB yesterday evening. Sylhet district unit BNP general secretary Ali Ahmad said they got permission, and they are now taking preparations for holding the rally. He said Oikyafront leaders will offer fateha at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Shah Paran (R) and at the grave of General MAG Osmani, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces during the War of Liberation, in Sylhet on October 24, and then hold the rally.

Earlier, the alliance announced that it would hold a rally in Sylhet on October 23 but the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) rejected their application filed on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Awami League (AL) yesterday accused the newly-floated Jatiya Oikya Front of staging a drama in the name of not getting permission for its rally in Sylhet on October 23.  “Police have already given permission to Oikya Front, but it’s staging a drama cashing in on the issue. It’s an old habit of Front leaders,” AL general secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters in Dhaka.

About Oikya Front leaders’ visit to Sylhet, Quader said every political party or alliance has the democratic right to hold a rally in any part of the country. “I have talked with our party chief, Sheikh Hasina, on the issue. She said there is no restriction on any quarter or political party to hold a rally in the country,” he added. Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, warned that if the new alliance tried to cause anarchy in the name of holding a rally, law enforcers would take care of them.

Regarding a note of dissent by election commissioner Mahbub Talukder, Quader said the President had formed the Election Commission through a “search committee”. “The President had sought lists of names from political parties. As per the lists, Mahbub Talukder was nominated as an election commissioner from the BNP. The EC could take a decision on the basis of majority,” he noted.

“This is the beauty of inner democracy. Any member has the right to disagree with another’s decision. His (Mahbub) note of dissent will not cause any hindrance to holding the forthcoming national polls,” he added.
