President urges medical students, teachers to acquire skills   

Kishoreganj: President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday urged medical students and teachers acquire skills to ensure best service to people, reports UNB. He made the urge while addressing at a programme of laying foundation of Abdul Kadir Molla hall of President Abdul Hamid Medical College and Hospital at the premises of the college.  “It is a matter of joy that a medical college has been established after my name. But it will hurt if any patient dies due to the lapses of the doctors. I do not expect such incidents,” he said. The President said “I am requesting all students to study properly. Teachers will have to play the vital role to make the students skillful.” He added that this medical college will not only serve people of Kishoreganj, it will be helpful for the adjacent areas like Sunamgnaj, Netrokona and Mymensingh. So doctors will have to make sure quality service in the hospital. Referring to the admission of the foreign students in the college, President said “Some students from the neighboring countries such as India, Bhutan, and Nepal are going to admit into the college next year. So all concerned people including teachers and students will have to be alert in ensuring good environment for studying as it will reflect country’s image to them.” President also emphasized that all concerned people have to pay more attention to produce skilled doctors to provide quality service.  Chairman of the medical college Rashida Khanom presided over the programme while director of the college Rasel Ahmed Tuhin spoke at the programme. Earlier on the last of his three-day visit, President Abdul Hamid inspected the possible site at Joika Union of Karimganj Upazilla for Kishoreganj University in the morning. The President attended several public meetings and held views-exchange meetings with a cross-section of people and different professional bodies today. This is the third visit to Kishoreganj since he took oath of office as President for the second consecutive term on April 24.

20 hurt in AL factional clash

At least 20 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League over establishing supremacy at Kesmatpur village in Harinakundu upazila on Wednesday. Witnesses said Awlad Hossain, president of Chandpur union unit Awami League and Kashem Biswas, general secretary of Chandpur union unit Jubo League, had long been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the area. As a sequel to the enmity, Mahbub, a supporter of Kashem Biswas and Shaheb, supporter of Awlad, locked into an altercation over the issue around 7 pm on Wednesday. At one stage, both groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving 20 people injured, said Asaduzzaman Munshi, officer-in-charge of Harinakundu Police Station. Of the injured 16 were taken to Sadar Hospital for treatment. On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Meanwhile, three people were arrested in this connection.    

Noor for ensuring women’s right to develop nation

NILPHAMARI: Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor here today emphasised the need for ensuring women rights and proper education of them for the overall development of the nation, reports BSS. “Women will have to establish their own rights… They will have to start struggle to establish their own right from own houses. Moreover, Women should educate themselves for their betterment as well as country’s development,” Noor said as the chief guest while addressing the inaugural function on an anti-violence campaign. Women Communications Centre in association with Diakonia and Udayankur Seba Sangstha (USS) organised the event at Nilphamari Central Shaheed Minar Chattar. “It is not possible to stop violence against women and protect their rights only by making laws… Men should change their mind set towards women in the society,” he added. He also urged parents to treat their daughter and son equally and educate their girls so that they can have the opportunity to make them self-dependent. Deputy Commissioner Nazia Shirin, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ashraf Hossain, Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Abuzar Rahman, Vice Chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad Arifa Sultana and  xecutive Director of the USS Alauddin Ali spoke on the occasion. Later, the minister inaugurated the academic building of Ramganj College, built at a cost of Tk 70.50 lakh.
