Aug 21 grenade attack case verdict

Capital punishment for Tarique demanded in Rajshahi, Ctg

AL leaders and activists of Rajshai, Chattogram and Barishal held separate rallies yesterday after hearing the news of the verdict in Aug 21 grenade attack cases that sentenced former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar, former deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu and 17 others to death and awarded BNP leader Tarique Rahman and 19 others life term imprisonment for the attack on Awami League rally on August 21, 2004.

In Rajshahi, Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) AHM Khairuzzaman Liton demanded death penalty for BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in the August 21 grenade attack cases, reports BSS.

“I think, the government will seek capital punishment for BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in the grisly grenade attack cases,” he said in his immediate reaction to the verdict of the August 21 grenade attack cases. Expressing his dissatisfaction over the verdict that awarded Tarique life imprisonment, Liton said Tarique was the mastermind of the horrible attack.

“I am very hopeful that the government will try to bring the fugitive convicts, including Tarique Rahman and his cohorts Harris Chowdhury and Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, to justice,” the RCC mayor said. After hearing the news of the verdict today, Rajshahi city unit of Bangladesh Awami League, led by its president Khairuzzaman Liton, brought out an agitation procession from its office premises.

In Chattogram, people of different political organisations including Awami League and its front organisations expressed their dissatisfaction over the verdict, reports BSS.

They said BNP leader Tarique Rahman is the mastermind of the much-talked-about heinous August 21 grenade attack and it is known to all.

Meanwhile, some of the political leaders also expressed their satisfaction for getting justice from the court. Different pro-AL organisations brought out separate processions from 17 points of the city demanding death sentence of Tarique Rahman.

Talking to BSS, Mofizur Rahman, general secretary of Chattogram district (south) Awami League, described BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman as a mastermind of the brutal attack. He also demanded capital punishment of Tarique Rahman and bring all fugitive convicts including Tarique, from abroad.

General Secretary of Chattogram north district Awami League M A Salam said the grenade attack was implemented according to the master plan of Tarique Zia.

“The general people expect capital punishment of Tarique,” he added. City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin demanded immediate implementation of the verdict and bring the mastermind Tarique Rahman back from abroad.

Our Barishal Reporter adds: Barisal city and district units Awami Juba League held a rally, led by Talukdar Md Eynus, MP and Jebunnesa Afroz, MP, demanding implementation of the trial.  Police cordoned off the district and city unit BNP offices in the morning. The law enforcers also foiled BNP activists’ bid to bring out procession on Sadar Road of the city.
