Verdict splashes in int’l headlines

A Dhaka court verdict in the August 21 grenade attack cases splashed in headlines across some international newspapers and media outlets including BBC and Al Jazeera.

The BBC headlined with ‘Bangladesh to hang 19 for deadly attack on 2004 rally’

A court in Bangladesh has sentenced 19 people to death for their role in a deadly grenade attack on a 2004 political rally in the capital Dhaka, says BBC.

Those to hang include a former minister and deputy minister, both leaders of the BNP party which was then in power. The party's current acting head, Tarique Rehman, was convicted to life in jail in absentia. The grenade attack on an Awami League rally left 24 people dead. Its leader Sheikh Hasina is now prime minister.

Al Jazeera flashed the headline ‘Bangladesh court sentences 19 to death over 2004 attack’.

In the shoulder a Dhaka court also sentences top opposition leader Tarique Rahman to life imprisonment over 2004 attack on a rally the news outlet added.

AFP headline was ‘Bangladesh sentences 19 to death over 2004 attack’.

Indian Express ran the story with a headline ‘Khaleda Zia’s son sentenced to life in 2004 grenade attack on Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina’ fronting the life imprisonment of Tarique Rahman, the fugitive son of former Bangladesh premier Khaleda Zia.
