AL not fully happy, wants death penalty for Tarique

Govt should issue Interpol Red Notice for Tarique, says Joy
Staff Reporter

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday reiterated the demand for death penalty for BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman as he was the mastermind of the August 21 grenade attack.

“Mufti Hannan acknowledged in his confessional statement in court that they had carried out the attack on the Awami League rally after taking permission from Tarique Rahman. Therefore, he should be awarded capital punishment in the case,” the AL leader said at a press conference, organised to give the ruling party’s formal reaction to the verdict.

The AL leader also demanded that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia be tried in connection with the grenade attack. Khaleda was aware of the attack, but she didn’t take any step to stop the attackers, he told reporters at the party’s Dhanmondi office. Earlier, in his immediate reaction, Quader said the AL was not fully satisfied over the verdict as Tarique Rahman was not awarded capital punishment.

“Tarique Rahman was the mastermind of the August 21 grenade attack and, so, he should be awarded capital punishment. However, we are not unhappy and at the same time we are not fully satisfied,” he added.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, was speaking to reporters after signing a contract for MRT Line-1 at BICC in Dhaka.

He said Tarique Rahman used to control all things from his Hawa Bhaban residence. “It was the centre of power. The plan of the grenade attack was mapped out from Hawa Bhaban,” he said.

He also said the prime target of the horrible attack was the then opposition leader and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The verdict on the grenade attack has come after 14 years, while it emerged as a topic of public discussion and criticism over this entire period, he said.

Earlier yesterday, a court sentenced to death 19 people, including former junior home minister Lutfozzaman Babar, and life imprisonment to another 19, including ex-Premier Khaleda Zia’s fugitive son Tarique Rahman, in connection with the grenade attack on August 21, 2004.

As many as 24 AL leaders and workers, including the then Mahila Awami League president and wife of late President Zillur Rahman, Ivy Rahman, were killed and around 500 others were injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister's ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy yesterday said the government should immediately issue a new 'Interpol Red Notice' for BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman who has been sentenced to life-term imprisonment in August 21 grenade attack cases, adds UNB. After the verdict, Joy writes in his Facebook post, "We should also ask the UK to extradite him."
