Renowned artist SM Sultan’s death anniversary observed

NARAIL:  The 24th death anniversary of renowned artist SM Sultan was observed in a befitting manner at his birthplace in the district today as people from all sections of the society pay rich tributes to the great son of the country.

The SM Sultan foundation and district administration jointly organised elaborate programmes to mark the famous artist’s death anniversary.

The programmes include Quran khani, dua and milad Mahfil, art competition, discussion on Sultan’s life and works and prize giving ceremony.

Over 200 children participated in the art competition at Shishu Swarga auditorium. Hundreds of people thronged Sultan’s mazar in the morning to pay their rich tributes and seek eternal blessings for the departed soul.

Sultan was born at Masumdia in Narail town on 10 august, 1924. He died in Jashore Combined Military Hospital on 10 October, 1994.

Sultan was adorned with Ekushey Padak in 1982, Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986 and Swadhinata Padak in 1993.

He was declared the Man of Asia in 1982 by Cambridge University and Bangladesh government declared him as resident of artist in 1984.

Abducted from Kushtia, girl rescued in Chuadanga

Kushtia: A Class-VI girl was rescued from Bhabanipur in Sadar upazila of Chuadanga district on Tuesday, 40 days after she was allegedly abducted from Balarampur village in Sadar upazila here, reports UNB.

The victim’s father alleged that Asif Mollah, 22, son of Azad Mollah of the same village, abducted her daughter on August 30 last. A case was filed with Islamic University Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on September 6.

Using technology, police traced the girl’s location and rescued her in the afternoon but failed to arrest Asif, said Ratan Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Islamic University Police Station.

Later, the girl was admitted to Kushtia General Hospital for medical test and police continued drive to arrest the criminal, the OC added.

Meeting on reducing infant mortality held in Nilphamari

A day-long orientation meeting on reducing maternal and child mortality was held at the conference room of Nilphamari Modern Hospital on Tuesday. The meeting was arranged by SHOW, a local organisation.

Biploby Rani Dey Roy, communication specialist of Plan International Bangladesh, Rangpur Divisional office  delivered the inaugural speech at the meeting that was presided over by assistant project officer  of the  organisation Md Altap Hossain. Dr Jahangir Alam, civil surgeon (in-charge) was also present as the chief guest.

According to the speakers, the organisation has been working in the entire district to reduce mortality  of both mothers and children for more than four years.

7 ‘gamblers’ held in Patuakhali

Plice arrested seven alleged gamblers from Mahipur fish port area in Kalapara of Patuakhali district on Tuesday night. Police also seized Tk 9,600 cash and 20 bundles of playing cards from their possession.

The arrestees were identified as Saiful Islam, 22, Miraj Khan, 25, Yusuf Akon, 27, Rashid Hawlader, 40, Belayet Hossain, 30, Rafiqul Islam, 25 and Bashar Hawlader, 26.

The detainees were handed over to senior judicial magistrate court in Kalapara yesterday morning. Md Kamal Hossain, sub-inspector of Mahipur Police Station said, “No one will be allowed to be involved with gambling in this area since now.”
