RANGPUR: The Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) jointly with Sadar upazila parisahd launched a programme of sowing of 20,000 palm seed in Sadar upazila here to absorb lightning damage for saving human lives, reports BSS.

Sadar upazila Chairman Nasima Zaman Boby inaugurated the programme at Reaz Bridge point in Haridebpur union of Sadar upazila on Tuesday afternoon as the chief guest.

Assistant Engineer of BMDA for Rangpur region AKM Mashiur Rahman delivered keynote speech narrating the role of palm trees in absorbing lightning charges and shocks to reduce the number of human deaths.

Engineer Mashiur Rahman said the present government has undertaken a plan to plant one million palm trees last year to reduce the number of people embracing deaths every year because of lightning strikes across the country.

“We are sowing palm seed by roadsides in rural areas in an effort to increase the number of palm trees for reducing the number of human deaths due to lightning,” he said.

Engineer Nur Islam said, “The initiative of palm seed sowing programme would take time to produce results as palm trees take years to grow.

But, it will help to reduce human deaths from lightning which is being considered as a natural disaster in the country.”

Nasima Zaman Boby said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken various steps, including sowing of palm seed, to bring the deaths from lightning strikes to the zero level in future.
