Ariful steals Day-2 show with double hundred

Batsmen ruled the rooster of the second day proceedings like the opening day as three batsmen clouted hundreds for their respective teams at different venues across the country in the round-1 fixture of the Walton-National Cricket League (NCL) yesterday.

Rajshahi Division compiled 446 for six against holders Khulna Division on the close of the Day-2 in the Tier-1 match at the green-tinged wicket of the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium.

Ariful Haque smashed double hundred as Rangpur Division piled on 502 against Barisal Division at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogura in other match of the Tier-1.

Dhaka Metro are in strong position against Sylhet Division at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium as the former took six wickets for 132 after their first innings total of 426.

Elsewhere at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Dhaka Division took 272-run lead against Chattogram Division in Tier-2 tie.

Khulna vs Rajshahi

Resuming the second day on 117-1, Rajshahi Division added 329 for five in 119 overs. Batsman Mizanur Rahman converted his overnight 74 to 115. Mizanur shared 89 with Forhad Hossain for the third-wicket. His patient 145-ball knock was laced with 16 boundaries and two sixes before turning to be Abdur Razzak’s season first wicket.

The wicketkeeper-batsman Jahurul Islam Omee took the charge to extend the total further. Omee pulled together a string of fifty-plus partnerships including an unbeaten 72 with Sunzamul Islam for the seventh wicket, a useful 67 fourth-wicket with Forhad Hossain, whose innings ended at 83 off 127 with 11 fours and a maximum and a 54 fifth-wicket with Sabbir Rahman Rumman, who fell for 33.

National discard Omee remained at stumps on 91 with Sunzamul Islam scoring 40.

Afif Hossain took three wickets for Khulna, giving away 57 runs in 15 overs.

Barisal vs Rangpur

Rangpur Division added 202 more runs at the cost of the remaining five wickets with overnight 300-5. Ariful Haque, who returned home from Asia Cup in UAE, clattered his career first-ever double century. He converted his overnight 117 to 231. His patient 325-ball innings was littered with 21 boundaries and four sixes before falling into Sohag Gazi’s target.

Dhiman Ghosh though went back for 28, Suhrawardi Shuvo fell five runs short of his half-century. National discard Sohag Gazi and Monir Hossain Khan claimed three wickets apiece for Barisal. Along with them, Kamrul Islam Rabbi bagged a brace for 94.

In reply, Barisal Division scored 91 for the loss of Shahriar Nafees, who fell for 24. Rafsan Mahmud remained unbeaten on 53 with Fazle Mahmud Rabbi making 12.

Sylhet vs Metro

In the wake of Enamul Haque Junior spin web, Dhaka Metro added only 94 runs at the cost of six wickets with overnight 332. Enamul Junior showcased the best figure of the season, finishing with 53.4-8-165-6.

After Marshal Ayub, Mohammad Ashraful clubbed a half century. He bashed six boundaries in his 108-ball 53. Ashraful’s overnight partner Mehrab Hossain, who walked back to the pavilion with 38. Qazi Anik made 24 for Metro.

Sylhet Division, in reply, fell into the devastation of Arafat Sunny and Mohammad Ashraful as they lost their sixes for 72. Left-arm spinner Sunny conceded 48 runs to take four wickets, while Ashraful picked two wickets for 35.

Enamul Haque Jr remained on 37 not out with Shahnur Rahman batting on 34.

Chattogram vs Dhaka

Dhaka Division’s bowlers did not allow Chattogram to make a big total as the former bundled out the latter for a paltry 142 following Dhaka’s first innings total 238.

Fast-bowler Shahadat Hossain Rajib grabbed four wickets for 62. Mosharraf Hossain Rubel captured a brace.

Sadikur Rahman top-scored for Barisal with 30. Sayed Sarker (26) and Mohammad Saifuddin (20) were the other contributors.

Dhaka Division in second innings scored 176 for no loss. Rony Talukdar clobbered an indefatigable 110-ball 100 with eight boundaries and three sixes. Abdul Mazid made an unbeaten 66 off 150, hitting nine fours and one six.
