Solve teachers’ crisis at Cumilla Medical College

It is disturbing to note that acute shortage of teachers and administrative staff in Cumilla Medical College has brought the medical institution to its knees, leaving its academic activities in disarray. Since its establishment in 1992, the medical college did not see any increase in its manpower.  According to the principal of the college, in the absence of professors and associate professors in Anatomy, Physiology, Community Medicine, Microbiology and Pharmacology departments the academic activities of the college are being run with assistant professors, lecturers and guest teachers.

Not only in Cumilla Medical College dearth of teachers is hampering academic activities in many medical colleges in the country. Many medical colleges in the country have no teacher to teach physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, community medicine and anatomy, eight basic subjects for the MBBS students. According to the Directorate General of Health Services about 50 per cent positions of professors, associate professors and assistant professors are currently vacant at government run medical colleges and specialised post graduate institutes.

Besides, private medical colleges are being run with less than 50 per cent of teaching staff, according to Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council and Dhaka University officials.

This kind of lackadaisical attitude of the authorities concerned in filling up the vacant posts of teachers at medical colleges is taking its toll on the overall medical education in the country. What will the students learn if their classes are not held in the absence of teachers? Will it not leave an adverse impact on the careers of the future doctors? This will jeopardise the health care services in the country.

Healthcare is one of the basic human rights that a citizen should enjoy. But how many citizens can enjoy the same? The overall healthcare scenario in the country does not show much promise. The number of physicians in the country is not adequate for the burgeoning population. Health care for rural people is even more frustrating.  There are doctors who do not want to leave the capital and the divisional cities. Absence of the facilities they enjoy makes them adamant.  Besides, there are some doctors who at best agree to get transferred to divisional cities. Decline in income from private practice drives them not to leave their convenient places. The government, particularly the health ministry and the directorate of health services, should take up the issue seriously.  There is no alternative to filling up the vacant posts of teachers at medical colleges. If needed, special examinations can be arranged for recruiting teachers.
