Bangladesh aim to win against Laos

Targeting to make a winning start in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament Bangladesh will begin their mission with taking on Laos today in the opening match at the Sylhet District Stadium.

The match will kick off 6:30pm, Bangladesh Television, Maasranga and Nagorik Television will telecast live the match from the Sylhet Stadium.

However, Bangladesh coach Jamie Day and the captain Jamal Bhuiyan expressed their optimistic to make a winning a start when they were talking in a pre-match press conference yesterday at a local hotel.

“Boys came back in another competition and they are okay, I am looking forward to the tournament expecting to do well.”

“First game is very important of any tournament and to win the opening match is more momentous to go forward, truly the win in the first match will steer to go ahead and we can expect to play in the semifinal, okay no problem with the team, no injury or any physical weakness. Every team wants to win so, we can also,” said Jamie, when he was replying to a query.

Jamie, when replied to another query about striking crisis or fumble at the striking zone, said, “Actually now we have six booters at the forward line, everyone has scoring ability and obviously we should take chance.”

Jamie when repeated his target said, “Palestine is the favourites to win the tournament, we set our first target to move into the semifinal, we need to win two games to make sure the berth among the last four. Boys worked hard, so we can look forward.”

Jamal Bhuiyan, captain of the team has also given importance to their first match – “First match is always important for any tournament, as it is a great advantage to move forward, if you can make a winning start.”

“As a host we are favourites in today’s match, yes, of course I have confidence, I believe the all 23 players of the team.”

When the captain was asked despite having no winning history against Laos in the previous meeting of two teams, when Bangladesh suffered in their first appearance in 2003 in the Asian Cup qualifying phase in Hong Kong and made a 2-2 draw after coming from 0-2 behind in a FIFA Friendly match at Laos.

Jamal, recalling the match said, “We conceded two goals first and made comeback to make it 2-2 at their home ground so, I don’t think it would be tough to beat them at our home.”

Meanwhile, the manager of Palestine team and the coach of the Philippines’ team said that it would be very good for them to play in the tournament as they have been taking preparation for the Asia Cup to be held in January and Laos is taking preparation for the ASEAN Cup.       

Josef Mari Malinay, manager of Philippines team said, “First time in the tournament, so a bit pressure is very natural.”

“It would be very helpful for us playing the tournament as we are preparing the team for Asia Cup, Yes, we have target to win the tournament.”

Captain of the team Misagh Bahadoran said, “It would the best for our preparation for the Asia Cup, we will do our 100 percent to win, all are hungry to win.”

Nuruddin coach of Palestine said, “My first target to play the tournament to select players for the Asia Cup. It is very good chance for us to select players, but to win the trophy is also our target.”

Basen, one of the key players of the Palestine said, “We here to be the champion in this tournament, coach also said that it is part of our preparation for the Asia Cup.”

Mike Wong Mun Heng, coach of Laos expecting to do the best, said, “It is very young team, have been preparing for the ASEAN, hope they will do the best.”

“Laos is always a very challenging team, they always come tough for others.”
