Khaleda needs to be hospitalised: Panel

BNP doubts party chief’s proper treatment
UNB

The medical board, formed by the government for jailed BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, yesterday suggested admitting her to a hospital like BSMMU where the treatment of all health problems is available though they have found 'no symptom of any serious disease' in her, reports UNB. Brigadier General Mohammad Abdullah-Al-Harun, director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), came up with the information while talking to UNB over phone.

"The medical board has submitted its report and it was sent to the jail authorities," Dr Harun said. "The specialist physicians of the medical board didn't find the symptoms of any risky disease, though she has long been suffering from various diseases and the medical board suggested admitting her to a hospital like BSMMU where the treatment of all health problems is available," he said. The five-member medical board examined her physical condition inside Old Dhaka Central Jail here on Saturday afternoon.

The government on Thursday formed the five-member fresh medical board comprising BSMMU expert physicians.

They are Prof Abdul Jalil Chowdhury (External Medicine), Prof Harisul Hoque (Cardiologist), Prof Abu Jafar Chowdhury (Orthopedic Surgeon), associate professor Tareq Reza Ali (Eye) and associate professor Badrunnesa Ahmed (Physical Medicine).

The medical board was formed following the meeting of BNP delegation, led by its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, with Home Minister Asaduzzman Khan on September 10.

Khaleda Zia has been in the erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail at

Nazimuddin Road since she was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8. On April 7 last, Khaleda Zia underwent some medical tests at the BSMMU because of her illness.

BNP has been demanding that Khaleda be shifted to United Hospital in the city for her ‘better’ treatment. Meanwhile, BNP has expressed doubt over the proper treatment of its chairperson Khaleda Zia by the medical board formed with ‘pro-ruling party doctors’. “We’re unhappy with the medical board. We don’t think our leader (Khaleda) would get proper treatment from the pro-ruling party doctors. We can’t trust it,” said BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he further said, “We still demand the formation of a new medical board, including our leader’s personal physicians, to ensure her proper treatment as she’s very sick.”

Referring to their party delegation’s meeting with the Home Minister on September 9, the BNP leader said Asaduzzaman Khan had promised to keep Khaleda’s personal physicians in the medical board. “We’ve got frustrated when the medical board was formed with only government physicians.”

On Thursday, the government formed a five-member medical board with physicians from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for examining Khaleda’s health condition and ensuring her treatment.

On September 9, a BNP delegation, led by the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and urged him to take steps for ensuring Khaleda’s treatment at United Hospital.

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said it will not be possible to ensure necessary treatment of Khaleda with suggestions of the medical board formed with the ruling party-supported doctors.

He also bemoaned that Khaleda, a three-time former Prime Minister and two-time ex-Opposition Leader, is now being deprived of treatment in jail as the government is trying to eliminate opposition politics.

BNP standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were, among others, present.
