Missing teacher found dead   

Police recovered the body of a school teacher from a water body in Boira area of Khulna city yesterday morning 15 days after he went missing. The deceased was identified as Kazi Taskin Hossain Toyon, 32, son of Kazi Tota of Mojgunni area in the city and the teacher of a local kindergarten school. Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Khalispur Police Station, said that Taskin went missing on August 28. Locals spotted his decomposed body floating in the water body in the morning and informed police. Later, police recovered it, the OC said, adding that he might have been killed over land-related dispute.

5 arrested over ‘gang-rape’

Law enforcers on Monday arrested four people over the alleged gang-rape of a housewife in Cumilla.  Police arrested four people over the 'gang-rape' of a housewife for four days after confining her to a house of Ballavpur village in Sadar South upazila. The arrestees are Masud Ali, 28, son of Sayed Ali, Masud, 30, son of Abdul Barek of Rajendrapur village in Sadar upazila, Hasan Miah, 26, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver and son of Saru Miah of Dhanpur area, and their accomplice Swapna Akhter, 27, wife of Shahid Miah of Ballavpur village. Police were trying to arrest another accused, Shahid, in a case filed over the incident. Officer-in-charge of Sadar South Model Police Station Mamunur Rashid said the victim, wife of an expatriate, was returning home at Ulurchar from her parents' house at Suagazi by the auto-rickshaw of Hasan on September 5. However, the three-wheeler driver took her to a house of Ballavpur village. After confining the housewife to the house, the miscreants raped her for four days. They also took photos of the nefarious act and demanded Tk 5 lakh from her. The victim managed to escape from the confinement on Saturday and filed the case on Monday.

13 Shibir activists placed on remand in Ctg

A Chattogram court yesterday put 13 activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) on one day remand in connection with sabotage case. Senior Chattogram Metropolitan Judicial Magistrate Abu Salem Mohammad Noman granted one day remand following 10 day remand prayer by the Sadarghat thana police, court sources said. Earlier, police arrested 13 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, with a number of Jihadi books and leaflets on September 3.

Navy rescues 9 fishermen

Bangladesh Navy (BN) rescued nine fishermen of a fishing trawler that sank near to Mongla fairway in the Bay of Bengal yesterday morning after colliding with a commercial vessel. Swadhin-3, with 12 fishermen onboard, from Patharghata sank after colliding with a ship at dawn, an ISPR release said. BN ship Turag reached the place of occurrence immediately and pulled out nine fishermen out of the sea. Two more BN ships, Meghna and Nishan, later joined the operation and continuously searching for the three missing fishermen.

Workshop on traffic signal/ traffic law held in capital

The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society yesterday organised a half-day workshop on “Traffic Signal / Traffic Law and Basic First Aid” to raise awareness among the drivers for the first time on the occasion of “World First Aid Day”, says a press release. The workshop was held in the training room of the National Headquarters of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society in the capital. Treasurer of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Advocate Tauhidur Rahman was present as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony. Surendra Kumar Regmi, Programme Coordinator, IFRC, Country office, Bangladesh Bangladesh spoke as a special guest. The Secretary-General of the Society Md Feroz Salah Uddin, former Secretary, presided over the function.
