JU students for resumption of classes

Academic activities of geography and environment department at Jahangirnagar University (JU) are being badly hampered by the ongoing conflict between the chairman of the department Professor Monzurul Hasan and other teachers of the department. A faction of the teachers has been observing strike for an indefinite period from September 3demanding holding academic council meeting.

But, the chairman of the department claimed that all classes and examination is continuing at the department.  Students of the department expressed deep concern as a faction of teachers are observing strike refraining from taking classes. They demanded resumption of the department's academic activities. Due to the conflict, the master’s final year laboratory based examination is being delayed, alleged students.

Students of the department, on condition of anonymity, alleged that teachers of the university and the chairman are becoming involved in undesirable conflicts for personal reasons.

Expressing their grave concern over the ongoing atmosphere some of the students said if the strike continues they will face a session jam. They urged the teachers to resolve their internal problems as early as possible and to return to all academic activities.

Professor Manzurul Hasan took charge as the chairman of the department on August 26. Meanwhile, a memorandum signed by 20 teachers of the department was submitted yesterday to the chairman for holding academic council meeting by September 20. When contacted, Chairman of the department Professor Monzurul Hasan said, “A faction of teachers is trying to create anarchy in the department by boycotting classes and examination.” He also assured that he will call academic meeting very soon.
