Youth gunned down in Kamrangirchar   

A young man was gunned down by unidentified miscreants in Kamramgir area of the capital on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Sharif, 38, a resident of Paschim Islambagh area.

Shaheen Fakir, officer-in-charge of Kamrangirchar police station, said hearing sound of gunshots from Eidgah field area, locals rushed in and found Sharif injured by bullet around 10:30pm. Later, he was rushed to DMCH where doctors declared him dead. Police said he might have been killed over previous enmity.

3 warehouses gutted in Ctg

Three warehouses were gutted in a fire incident at Boro Quarter area in Pahartali of the port city on Sunday afternoon. The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a cookeries warehouse around 1:00 pm and soon engulfed adjoining jute and tire chemical warehouses, said Jashim Uddin, sub-assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence (media).

Three firefighting units doused the fire after two hours of frantic effort, he added. The estimated losses caused by the fire could not be ascertained yet.

4838 cases filed for traffic rule violation

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the capital streets on Sunday filed 4838 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violation.

It also realised over 31.52 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release.

Of the total cases, 276 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 46 for using hydraulic horn, seven for using hotter and beckon light and 19 others for using tinted glass. Police filed 2152 cases against motorcycles and seized 115 others for violation of the traffic rules.

10 drug addicts jailed

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested 15 people here while 10 of them were sentenced to different terms of jail each by mobile courts on charge of taking drugs and drug trading.

The elite force conducted drives in different areas of Rajshahi, Natore and Chapainawabganj districts on Sunday and arrested 15 people for their alleged involvement in drug trading or taking drugs. The RAB officials said they also seized 56 bottles of foreign-made wine, seven liters of country-made liquor, 21.5 kg of ganja and some other drugs- taking instruments from their possession. Later, the arrested were produced before three separate mobile courts.

PUIC team to meet Speaker today

A 19-member delegation of Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) will make a courtesy call on Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today. The delegation arrived in Dhaka yesterday for a five-day visit in Bangladesh, a press release said.

The delegation will also hold a meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam today.

The delegation will visit different Rohingya refugee camps at Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar on September 12.

Death anniversary of Anwarul Abedin observed  

The 6th death anniversary of Dr Anwarul Abedin, founder chairman-, American International University – Bangladesh (AIUB), was observed on Wednesday in a befitting manner, says a press release.

After Zohr prayers, a doa mahfil was organised followed by a discussion remembering his illustrious life on the permanent campuses of AIUB at 2pm.  

At the beginning of the ceremony his sons founder member of AIUB Board of Trustees Hasanul A Hasan, Ishtiaque Abedin and daughter Nadia Anwar, Vice-Chancellor Dr Carmen Z Lamagna along with deans, teachers, officers and employees of all classes of AIUB are given a wreath to his portrait.

 After the ceremony, the doa mahfil was arranged for the peace and forgiveness of the departed souls.
