Bismillah Group chairman, MD among 9 jailed

STAFF REPORTER

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced nine people, including Bismillah Group Managing Director (MD) Khaza Soleiman Anwar Chowdhury and its Chairman Nowrin Hasib, to ten years in prison in a money laundering case. Judge Md Atabullah of Dhaka’s special court-10 delivered the verdict. The court also fined the convicts Tk 30.67 crore, which was laundered by them. The fine must be deposited to the treasury in 60 days, the verdict said.

The others, who have been sentenced by the court, include Bismillah Group MD’s father and company director Shafiqul Anwar Chowdhury, deputy managing director Akbar Aziz Muttaki, general managers Abul Hossain Choudhury and Riaz Uddin Ahmed, Network Framework System Limited chairman M Akter Hossain, and former Janata Bank general manager Abdus Samad Azad.

All the nine convicts currently remain at large.

The ACC had filed 12 cases against 54 people over the swindling of about Tk 990.03 crore out of a total of Tk 1,200 crore from five banks by Bismillah Group on November 3, 2013.

The cases were filed by ACC Director Iqbal Hossain with Dhaka’s Ramna, Motijheel and New Market police stations.

The commission arrested at least 10 bankers in this regard while the Bismillah Group bosses had gone into hiding before the commission started its inquiry in 2013.

In 2015, after completion of the investigation, the commission had submitted the charge sheet in a case filed with the New Market police station against 9 people on charge of swindling Tk 153 million. The court had started the trial proceedings against the nine in 2016 and after completion of the trial proceedings the court yesterday delivered the verdict.

Prosecution lawyer Advocate Mosharraf Hossain Kajol told reporters that there were several other cases against the Bismillah Group. This was just the first verdict.

During the proceedings, the court heard the testimony of 24 witnesses in connection with the case, he said.
