Public heath dept completes dev work worth Tk 95cr

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Noakhali
Public heath dept completes dev work worth Tk 95cr

The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) had completed development work at a cost of Tk. 94.60 crore in Noakhali from 2009 to 2017. Some water and sanitation-related work, which would cost Tk. 26 crore, is still going on, said Palash Chandra Das, executive engineer of DPHE, Noakhali, yesterday.

The work includes installation of 20 tubewells and pump houses, two overhead tank sand one water treatment plant for water supply and sanitation in rural areas. Currently, three overhead tanks and two water treatment plants are operating in these areas.

The implementation of the "Special Rural Water Supply" and "GOB-UNICEF" projects were completed during the first five–year term at a total cost of around Tk. 120 crore. In additional to necessary infrastructure  development, the installation of 40 deep wells for ensuring water supply in rural areas and construction of 40,000 sets of low-cost sanitary latrines, 16 community toilets and five public toilets are going on, said Das.

According to DPHE source, the work of installing a nearly 80-km-long pipeline and 10 tube wells and pump houses in municipalities  at the upazila headquarters, growth centres and rural areas has been completed.

A good number of deep tube wells are being built to provide safe drinking water to poor people in the district.

As many as 4,000 houses will be given water connection upon successful implantation of the project in this financial year. The work of installing a 150-km-long pipeline has already been completed.

The existing water treatment plant technology has become ineffective and the demand for deep tube wells has increased in the area due to rapid decline of the groundwater level along with arsenic contamination in water plant aquifer in many areas.

Das told the Independent that excessive use of groundwater and the existing adverse impact of climate change are putting local people in trouble. Currently, a large number of deep tube wells have been installed in the nine upazilas to maintain round the year drinking water supply in remote areas.
