Saff Suzuki Cup

India beat Maldives 2-0

Maldives into semis on toss
Sports Reporter

Thanks to the toss-luck, Maldives advanced to the semis as the runners-up of Group B in Saff Suzuki Cup 2018 after both the Sri Lanka and Maldives could earn only a point each from their two matches, as India handed a 2-0 defeat to Maldives yesterday. Being the goal difference of Sri Lanka and Maldives also the same, the semifinalist had to be decided by toss as per the by-law. Both Maldives and Sri Lanka drew their first match 0-0 and went down to India by the same margin (2-0).

Seven times champions out of the last 11 editions of the SAFF Championship, India had no trouble winning the match against Maldives with two first-half goals, one each from Nikhil Chandra Shekhar and Manvir Singh yesterday.

Maldives started in high spirits, but India was close to scoring their first goal when Maldives midfielder Mohamed Arif hit their own woodwork while trying to clear a Nikhil Chandra Shekhar header on the ninth minute.

Indian winger Nikhil picked up a through pass from Faruk Chowdhury to score the first goal in the 36th minute (1-0). Striker Manvir Singh scored the second on the 44th minute beating the Maldives goalkeeper Mohamed Faisal.

Maldives forward Ibrahim Mahudhee Hussain’s header on the 86th minute was not good enough to bring a goal.

Now India will take on Pakistan while Nepal is set to face Maldives in the semifinals.

Interestingly, Maldives qualified for the semis after obtaining only a point in Group B, whereas Bangladesh earned six points in Group A and still failed to advance.
