‘Run for Life’ at DU today

On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day 2018, the Great Bangladesh Run in association with Tomorrow Foundation (BTF) will organise an awareness run under the banner ‘Run for Life: A suicide Prevention Awareness Run’ on Dhaka University campus today. Biren Sikder, state minister for youth and sports, will inaugurate the programme where former vice-chancellor of DU Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique will be present as the special guest. A total of 250 participants will begin the run from the Aparajiya Bangla on the DU campus at 6 am, said a press release. Associate Professor Helal Uddin Ahmed of National Mental Health Institute will be present as the guest of honour where prominent musician Samina Chowdhury, first Bangladeshi woman to climb Everest Nishat Majumder and cricketer Taskin Ahmed, among others, will be present. The World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on September 10 every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003. The run is supported by Universal Medical College and University of Dhaka where Al Kaderia Ltd is the hospitality partner.

Int’l conference on geosciences begins at RU

RAJSHAHI: A two-day International Conference on Geosciences and Environment began at senate building of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday. Department of Geology and Mining of RU organised the conference for the first time. RU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha addressed the opening ceremony as the chief guest with chairman of the department Prof Khandaker Enamul Haque in the chair. Prof Selim Reja welcomed the participants. In his remarks, Prof Shaha said the conference will provide an important opportunity to meet renowned geoscientists, environment related scientists and miner which will help exchange the scientific ideas among them. RU officials said the conference includes a daylong field trip to the important Pleistocene Barind Clay localities of Chapainawabgonj district. Large number of teachers, researchers and professionals from home and abroad are joining the conference.
