Experts for literacy campaign beyond signing names

UNB

Target of literacy campaign should not be limited to developing the skill of signing names only, but at making the new generation culturally and socially literate and knowledgeable about country's history, said experts yesterday, reports UNB. The experts made the observations while addressing a views exchange meeting at National Press Club to mark the International Literacy Day 2018, observed globally on September 8. The programme was organised by Save the Children and Manabik Shahajya Sangstha (MSS).

Shafi Ahmed, an academic and senior editorial advisor of Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) appreciated attainment of a significant literacy rate of 72.9 per cent but he stressed on the need of imbuing the spirit of cultural and national heritage among the members of new generation. Speaking as chief guest at the programme, Minister of Primary and Mass Education, Advocate Mostafizur Rahman said "The country has developed in every sector, specially in education but still there remains some gap to fulfill our target - 100 per cent literacy." Mass involvements and community initiatives are necessary to realise 100 per cent literacy rate, the minister added.
