Workshop on DNA barcode begins at JU

SAVAR: A two daylong workshop on DNA barcode was held on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus.

JU Zoology department organised the workshop at the DNA barcode laboratory at the department on Wednesday. Dean of JU Biological Faculty Prof Abdul Zabbar Hawlader inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest in the morning.

Presided over by Chairman of the department and the Sub-Manager of the DNA Barcode project Prof Monwar Hossain, Prof N Senthilkumar of Mizoram University presented keynote speech at the event.

A total of 8 teachers of different universities of the country attended the function.  Over 70 teachers and the students of the department are taking part in the workshop.

Safe drinking water facility at Cox’s Bazar Govt College inaugurated

Cox's Bazar: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and its partner NGO Forum for Public Health on Wednesday inaugurated a safe drinking water facility at Cox's Bazar Government College.

The project is designed to supply safe drinking water for around 12,500 students at the college and to reduce their health risks.

Before this facility, there was no safe drinking water for the students.

College principal Prof AKM Fazlul Karim Chowdhury said all the students would benefit. "We are very grateful and thankful to UNHCR for its special contribution to this college," he said. UNHCR's senior operations manager Elisabeth Pelster said the generous support local Bangladeshis had shown when tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees arrived in Cox's Bazar seeking assistance since last August.

The programme is one of the 'quick impact' projects that UNHCR has been undertaking in support of the Bangladesh host community.

Int’l conference on biochemistry held at RU

RAJSHAHI: A daylong international conference on biochemistry and molecular biochemistry was held at Rajshahi University (RU) on Thursday.

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biochemistry organised the conference where more than 100 researchers and teachers from different countries, including Bangladesh, Japan, Malaysia and India, took part.

Around 88 papers were presented in three sessions of the conference. RU pro-vice chancellor Prof Dr Ananda Kumar Saha inaugurated conference at the conference room of university senate building in the morning.

Chaired by chairman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biochemistry Department Prof Md Moshiur Rahman, the conference was addressed, among others, by dean of Science Faculty Prof M Khalilur Rahman and Prof Md Tofazzal Hossain of the department.
