Call for changing mentality to prevent violence against women

UNB

Underscoring the need for changing the mentality to prevent violence against women, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki yesterday said the act of changing the mindset should begin from the families, reports UNB.

“It'll be possible to stop violence against women and children if we teach our sons to show respect towards women and if male members refrain from unleashing violence against women,” she said while speaking at a seminar on “National Action Plan 2018-30 to Prevent Violence against Women and Children”.

The Women and Children Affairs Ministry organised the programme at the city's Biam auditorium. The state minister said extensive awareness campaign is needed to change people's outlook and mentality so that no child or woman becomes victim of violence.

Director General of the Department of Women Affairs Kazi Rowshon Akter said sexual harassment against women in workplaces and public transport is the main obstacle to women empowerment.

Women's development will be hampered greatly if women face sexual violence and insecurity in their workplaces, she said, adding that lack of a safe environment in workplace will lead to frustration among women making them reluctant to go to work.

While presiding over the programme, Additional Secretary to the Women and Children Affairs Ministry Mahmuda Sharmin Benu said in the National Action Plan 2018-30, several proposals have been incorporated from the district and upazila levels.

Project Director of the National Action Plan Dr Abul Hossain read out the draft of the plan at the seminar.
