Fair on school premises defying ban in Barishal

A trade fair is going to be held  on the playground of historical Braja Mohan Institution (known as B M School) violating a restriction imposed by the education ministry.

Education ministry issued a ban on holding any commercial fair or show on school premises without the ministry's permission.

Dakkhinanchaliyo Shilpi Parishad, a local cultural organisation, is set to hold the month-long handicraft fair, scheduled to begin at Braja Mohan Institution on September 10.

During a visit to the spot yesterday, this correspondent found construction of stalls and digging for drainage works are going on full swing. Al Imran, one of the coordinators of the fair organising committee, said they had been organising the fair at the same venue for the last five years taking permission from the school authorities and commerce ministry.

The fair will be organised at the back side of the institution and there is no arrangement of entertainment items. So it will not hamper academic atmosphere of the school, he said.

“We pay a fee of Tk 3.8 lakh to the school authorities for the development of the institution. Organising committee excavating the drain for managing waterlogging on the ground and the drain would also be filled up after ending the fair”, he added.

Lutfar Rahman, headmaster of the school, said fair organisers have been holding the fair there for the last seven years with permission from the school authorities.

About the fee, he said “The money collected from the fair organising committee will be used for the development activities of the school like construction of school gate, boundary wall and residence of staff.”

School managing committee permitted the fair on the basis of the approval of commerce ministry, headmaster of the institution added.

“As the fair is going to be organised at the backside of the school and there are no entertainment elements it would not affect the academic activities,” the headmaster said.

Mahabub Morshed Shamim, chairman of B M School managing committee, said the money collected from the fair will benefit the school in its development work.

They got permission from the commerce ministry to hold the trade fair, he said.

To familiarise the local producers with the current trend of business the fair is organised. The fair will not hamper regular academic activities as no loudspeaker will be used, said he.  The students' guardians, however, expressed dismay at commercial use of the school ground. Abdur Rashid, a guardian, said the fair will definitely hamper educational atmosphere.

Braja Mohan Institution, which is an MPO-listed school, was established by Mahatma Ashwini Kumar Dutta in 1984. Students from class III to X study there.
