Death of 2 students

2 Jabal-e-Noor owners, 4 staff chargesheeted

Staff Reporter

Police have filed a chargesheet with a Dhaka court against six people for the death of two students in an accident at Kurmitola on July 29. The victims were run over by a Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus on Airport Road, triggering a nationwide protest by students to demand safe roads and justice for the deceased. Yesterday, Detective Branch (DB) inspector Kazi Shariful Islam submitted the chargesheet under Section 304 (causing death due to negligence) to the chief metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka.

The chargesheet accused the two owners of the Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus, Shahadat Hossain and Jahangir Alam, two drivers Masum Billah and Zubayer Sumon, and two helpers Enayet Hossain and Kazi Assad for the deaths. Two of the accused—Jahangir Alam and Kazi Assad—are absconding.

According to the chargesheet, the driver and assistant of the killer bus ignored the passengers’ plea for safety and raced against two other buses for picking up more people. One of the buses blocked the road after racing down from the Zillur Rahman flyover near Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College. Meanwhile, the driver of another bus, Masum Billah, rushed in to pick up 14–15 students of the college around 12.30 pm, mowing down Abdul Karim alias Rajib Uddin (18) and Dia Khanam Mim (17) in the process.

The chargesheet also mentioned that the two buses had overtaken two or three times that day. Following the accident, Dia’s father had lodged a case at Cantonment police station.

On August 1, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-1 detained the drivers and helpers of the two buses from Mirpur and Barguna in Dhaka. One of the bus owners, Shahadat Hossain (60), was also arrested the same evening. Later, the DB took over the investigation in the case. Among the arrestees, Masum and Shahadat gave confessional statements under Section 164 in a court.

According to police, the accused drivers had licences only for light vehicles like motorcycles and microbuses and not for driving buses. Despite knowing this, the owners allowed them to drive heavy vehicles.

The two helpers were accused of not preventing the drivers from reckless driving. The registration number of the three buses of Jabal-e-Noor that involved in racing that led to the accident are Dhaka Metro B-11-997, Dhaka Metro B-11-7657 and Dhaka Metro B-11-7580. Masum was driving Metro B-11-997, the killer bus.
