Rawhide sells at throwaway prices in Tangail

Our Correspondent, Tangail

Rawhide traders of the district are suffering losses due to a sharp fall in prices of rawhide in Pakutia and Bolla hide markets after Eid-ul-Azha. Pakutia market in Ghatail upazila and Bollah under Kalihati are the largest trading centres of rawhide in the region. Sellers and buyers from Tangail, Jamalpur, Sherpur, part of Mymensingh, Gazipur, and Sirajgong come to the markets for trading in hides, which reaches the peak after Eid-ul-Azha. The rawhide market this year has been very dull compared to the past few years due to the sharp fall in prices.

Seasonal traders, who collected the skins of sacrificial animals from door to door with the hope of getting profits, sustained losses due to the unusually low price of hides in the market. They procured cow skin for Tk 700 to Tk 1,100 per piece and goat skin for Tk 40 to Tk 50.

Gandha, a seasonal hide trader of Madhupur upazila, said that he bought 20 cowhides for Tk 18,000, but was compelled to sell those to wholesale traders for Tk 16,000.

Mofazzol Mia of Katlamari village under Fulchhari upazila said he bought 15 cowhides for Tk 12,000, but had to sell them to a trader for Tk11,000.

Shahinur Alam and Shamim Ahmed, wholesalers at the Bollah hide market told this correspondent that the traders invested in this sector by taking loans from the banks, NGOs and other local sources in the hope of earning good profits. On the other hand the industrialists gave cash money to the local buyers. But this year they did not give any advance as the market has been shifted to Savar.

Humayun Kabir, a trader of Elenga, said that he bought 400 caw hides and 550 goat hides and preserved them by applying salts. He brought the hides in Pakutia market but got no buyer. He will have to preserve the hides using fresh salt for selling after one month.

Small and seasonal traders blame a syndicate of tanneries and companies comprising big buyers. Warehouse owners are now purchasing hides from middlemen at low prices and stockpiling them so they can sell them when market prices rise, said Md. Jalal Mia, a trader of Tangail town. He added that he bought 40 caw hides and 50 goat hides but could not earn any profits.

Tanneries and companies manufacturing leather products will procure huge quantities of hides in due course. Small traders will be ruined if the market price remains static, said Abdul Kader leasee of Pakutia hide market.
