Theatre troupe Palakar will bring their play ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jol’, produced based on Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Chinnapatra’, on stage today at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) at 7pm, while Dhaka Padatik will stage its new play ‘Trial of Surya Sen’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA at 5pm, in the Segun Bagicha of the capital. Both of the plays will be staged today as a part of the

five day theatre festival organised by Industrial Development Leasing Company of Bangladesh Limited (IDLC).

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated the festival as chief guest yesterday on the academy premises, while CEO and Managing Director of IDLC Arif Khan was present among others. Artistes of Sadhona presented group dances at the inaugural ceremony of the festival.

The play ‘Banglar Mati Banglar Jol’ is scripted by Syed Shamsul Haq and directed by Ataur Rahman. The play upholds Tagore’s observations and feelings expressed to his nice Indira Devi. The play is also a description of the scenic beauty of the countryside through Tagore’s perception, and articulates how the poet was moved by the openness of the rural people and the mystic songs of Lalon.

On the other hand, based on the anti-British movement, ‘Trial Surya Sen’ has been written and directed by Masum Aziz. This is the 38th production of Dhaka Padatik. Along with 40 other characters, the main characters of the play include Surya Sen, Pritilata, Kalpana Dutta, Ambika Chakravarti, Lokenath Bal and Nirmalsen. Surya Sen was a revolutionary who was influential in the Indian independence movement (against British rule) and who is noted for leading the 1930 Chittagong armoury raid in Chittagong of Bengal in British India (now in Bangladesh).
