13 gold bars seized at Ctg airport

Customs officials recovered 13 gold bars, weighing 1.51 kg, from a cartoon at Shah Amanat International Airport yesterday.

Tipped off, a team of customs officials conducted a drive at a flight of US Bangla Airlines coming from Doha and recovered the gold bars from a cartoon, said Md Mahabubur Rahman, assistant commissioner of Customs Intelligence of the airport. The market value of the seized gold bars is Tk 65 lakh, he added. However, they could not arrest anyone in this connection.

UK BNP leader held in Sylhet   

Police detained BNP UK unit Joint General Secretary Shohidul Islam Mamun from his residence in Sylhet city’s Badambagich area on Monday afternoon.

Based on obvious allegation, the law enforcers arrested him from his residence, said Md Abdul Wahab, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP). The police official, however, denied disclosing the matter. Meanwhile, sources at the SMP office said the secretary might have been detained for his involvement with the attack on Bangladesh High Commission in the UK. Earlier on February 8, some leaders and activists of BNP attacked Bangladesh High Commission in the UK as its officials refused to accept a memorandum regarding Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Confce on election management begins today

The 9th conference of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA), formed with eight election commissions of the SAARC region, will begin in the capital today.

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will inaugurate the two-day event as the chief guest at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden at 9 am, Joint Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat SM Asaduzzaman said. Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh KM Nurul Huda will preside over the conference that will end on September 7, he said.

A total of 21 representatives from the election commissions of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives will take part in the meeting.

The FEMBoSA was formed under the auspices of Bangladesh Election Commission in 2010.

Earlier, the 8th conference of the forum was held in Kabul, Afghanistan from September 24 to 25, 2017.

BCL leader goes missing after dip in Padma

A leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), ruling party Awami League’s student front, went missing while taking bath in the Padma River at Fultola Ghat in Godagari upazila on Monday afternoon.

Ishak Ali, 23, official secretary of Godagari municipality unit BCL, ward no.1 and son of Ashraful of Achuavata village in the upazila. He was a first year degree student of Godagari Government College. BCL leader Kamal Hossain said Ishak went to take bath in Padma River and drowned around 5pm. Following this matter, although local people dove into a massive search operation, they failed to trace him, Kamal added. Meanwhile, the local Fire Service and Civil Defence unit was informed, but they were yet to commence any search operation till Monday evening.

Jamaat-Shibir men held with bombs in Rajshahi

Police in separate drives arrested a Jamaat and two Shibir leaders with bombs and extremism books from different areas in the Rajshahi last night. According to police, the arrested persons were identified as Obaidur Rahman, 47, Ismail Hossain Siraji, 20, and Shakib Hossain, 23.

On a tip-off, a police team conducted a raid at Baroghoria village under Tanore upazila in midnight and arrested Obaidur Rahman from his house. The police team also recovered four hand bombs and five petrol bombs after searching the house.
