‘Time for youngsters to take the charge of the team’

Abu Haider Rony, the youngest and comparatively less-experienced pacer in the Asia Cup-bound Bangladesh pace bowling battery, said Tuesday that time comes for young players to take the charge of the team from the seniors.

Rony also said that the ratio of team’s success will be increased if juniors perform a bit better what they are usually doing beside the senior most players of the fold.

“The senior most players we have in the team such as Mushy bhai, Shakib bhai, Tamim bhai, Riyad bhai, Mashrafe bhai are all in fine forms,” said Abu Haider Rony, who played so far 10 T20Is after being sneaked into international arc in 2016.

“Liton among juniors is in good touch. Mithun bhai and Shanto are also in good touch. It’s not that we, the juniors, are not giving support to the seniors for the team’s success. If we could give this support a bit further, it’d be better for the team,” Rony told reporters after their intense morning practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

“Our seniors are performing regularly. Now it’s time for our juniors to take the charge. Currently we can win five matches if we could play 10 matches but if juniors support more, this number would be 7-8,” he added.

The left-handed pacer, who is keenly waiting for his OID debut in Asia Cup said that he always feels urgency inside him to bowl well after seeing the improved performance of the squad’s senior pace bowlers.

“It’s really a challenge for me because those who are currently in the national fold are all established bowlers. My experience among them is comparatively less,” the 22-year-old paceman said.

“I’m trying to make me experienced as much as possible to see our seniors. Actually there is always a competition among the pacers. Of them, two-three pacers are currently doing well,” he also said.

“I feel urgency to see all them that I’ve to do well. It’s good sign that a competition is going on in the team for gaining experience or excel each other by performing well what I enjoy it,” he added.

Rony said that he is working to develop his stock delivery to bring perfection over it along with trying to increase his bowling variation.

“I’m now working with bowling variations. Previously I used to bowl ‘off-cutter’. Now I’m trying to bowl ‘Back off the hand’ and ‘Knuckle-ball’ along with ‘Yorker’,” he said.

“Now I’m trying to bring perfection over those. But I know the perfection will not be come in a day. I’ll be successful to apply it in a match after day by day practice,” he continued.

“Master (Courtney Walsh) returns Dhaka today. No talks hold with him yet. All are speaking how we could use our wrist in bowling. Shariful and Khaled who have good heights can use their wrists in bowling. They will get good bounce for their heights. It’s an advantage. Work may be done over wrist bowling ahead.”

“It is good to work on spot-basis practice because such situations will come in games. It is witnessed that it might be needed six or seven or nine runs off an over in a match how we will defend it. Batsman has also a challenge to score such runs in an over. Such type of practice increased the intensity of the confidence and provided impetus how to handle the situation.
