Leaders and activists being arrested at random: BNP

The BNP yesterday accused the government of arresting party leaders and activists at random, implicating them in new cases centring on its founding anniversary.

It alleged that over 400 leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies have been arrested during the last several days.

BNP leaders observed that the mammoth gathering on September 1 in the capital had unnerved the ruling party, so it was carrying out arrests to prevent them from getting organised to wage a movement.

Leaders and activists of the BNP and its front and associate organisations have been arrested across the country in cases filed under the Special Act. The police arrested over 400 leaders and  activists of the party in a week, said BNP senior joint

secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

He also said cases were being filed against the party leaders and activists on charges of carrying out sabotage. “The ruling alliance has panicked. It is now giving a final bite by making arrests and filing false cases against BNP leaders and activists,” he added.

The BNP leader further said the leaders and activists are being implicated in false cases of sabotage. Even old cases against them are being revived. There is no doubt that the cases are planned, he said.

Over 50 leaders were arrested from Kustia and 25 from Jhenaidah, he said.

He also said new cases have been filed in many districts including Kustia, Bogura, Bagerhat, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Narail, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Jenaidah, Narayanganj and Pirojpur.

In Dhaka, cases have been filed with Kadamtoli, Shampur, Demra, Wari, Sutrapur Jatrabari and Tejgaon police stations, he said.

He strongly protested against the arrest of party men and demanded that they be released.

Otherwise, he warned, thatthe movement to restore democracy would be intensified.

BNP vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu said: “The government is suffering from a fear psychosis. BNP leaders and activists are being arrested so that they cannot get organised and launch a movement.”
