Charge sheet to be
submitted this week

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will submit its charge sheet before a Dhaka court by the end of this week, naming six people as accused in connection with the deaths of two college students in a bus mishap on the capital’s Airport Road.

Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of the DB, disclosed this to reporters yesterday (Monday), adding that the charge sheet will be submitted against Masum Billah, Zobair Sumon and Sohag, drivers of three buses of Jabaj-e-Noor Paribahan, two helpers Enayet and Ripon, and Noor Shahadat Hossain, owner of the bus.

Baten said the accused have been charged under Section 304 CrPC. Six people, including the owner of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan, were accused and the charge sheet prepared. The charge sheet will be sent to the court within this week.

The section ‘A’ of Criminal Procedure of 304 mentions the punishment for reckless driving on the road leading to a deadly accident, and ‘B’ of 304 mentions the quantum of punishment for death of another person by negligence.

Four of the accused are currently in jail but the other two are absconding. Earlier, the court fixed the date to submit the charge sheet by 5 September. Baten mentioned that the charge sheet will be submitted before that date.

Investigation officers said the accused drivers had licences only for light vehicles like motorcycles and microbuses, and yet, they were driving heavy vehicles like buses with these. They had no professional licence for driving buses. The owner allowed them to drive heavy vehicles despite knowing that they did not have the requisite licences. The helpers of the two buses were accused of not preventing the drivers from driving the buses recklessly.

On July 29, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College—Abdul Karim alias Rajib Uddin, 18, and Dia Khanam Mim, 17—were run over and killed by a bus of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan during an alleged race between three buses on the Airport Road.

The accident triggered a nationwide protest by students, demanding safe roads and seeking justice for the victims.

Among the arrestees, bus driver Masum and its owner Shahadat gave confessional statements under Section 164 before a court. Later, Dia’s father filed a case with the Cantonment police station in connection with the accident.

The DB later launched its investigation into the case. Moshiur Rahman, investigation officer (DB–North) of the case, said the investigation has been completed. He expected all the details would soon be revealed.
