BFF chief hopes for the best

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) President Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin on Monday said that he hopes Bangladesh will be champion in the imminent SAFF Suzuki Cup 2018.

“As a footballer and BFF president, it is my desire that we could be champion in SAFF this time around,” said Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin, who is also president of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).

But everything depends on the players how they perform in the tournament,” Salahuddin told at the sponsor introduction and logo unveiling programme at the BFF headquarter at Motijheel yesterday.

Powered by Anontex, in the SAFF Suzuki Cup 2018, Adtouch Sports and Live Events has been ground rights holder.

He was accompanied by BFF senior vice president and local organising committee chairman of SAFF Abdus Salam Murshedy, BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag, Anontex Group director Anwarul Islam Ferdous, Anontex Group advisor Shyamal Dutta and CEO of Adtouch Sports and Live Events S M Nawaz Shohag, among others, were also present.

Salahuddin, ace footballer of Bangladesh, came to power in BFF in 2008. Just a year after his presidency, Bangladesh had hosted SAFF tournament for the second time after 2003 but they derailed from the semifinals.

Therefore, Bangladesh are yet to clinch the coveted trophy. Bangladesh yet again are going to host the SAFF tournament after a nine-year hiatus. This time the question repeatedly is coming to the fore that would the men in red and green be able to put up the trophy again?

Bangladesh were in practice for SAFF championship for so many days. BFF arranged a camp for 35-40 players at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Prothisthan (BKSP) after the completion of the domestic league. The Federation sent them Qatar to hold conditioning camp.

Footballers in Qatar played a couple of practice matches beside their conditioning camp. Returning home from there, they went to South Korea for the three weeks and did the same things. They then traveled to Indonesia for Asian Games.

After such types of preparation, Salahuddin and so believes that they could be championed in this edition.

“We’ve done almost everything what is needed for the preparation of the SAFF. I or Murshedy could not play for them. I think it’s time for players and coaches what is needed to be SAFF champion,” the ace footballer said.

“We sent them Qatar for three-week where they practiced along with played practice matches. A week after their Qatar tour, we sent them South Korea where they also the same thing. Thereafter, they went to Indonesia to play Asian Games. As soon as coming back home from Jakarta, we arranged a friendly match against Sri Lanka before stepping into the SAFF,” he also said.

“We’re very happy with the team’s preparation. Let’s see what they do. Actually we have done everything from the federation for their best preparation for the tournament,” he added.

The seven-nation tournament of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) will get underway with the matches of Bangladesh vs Bhutan and Pakistan vs Nepal at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.

Bangladesh have been clubbed in Group A with Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan, while Group B consists of holders India, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
