Sexual violence increases in Sherpur, Panchagarh, Sylhet

UNB

A schoolteacher has been suspended for 'sexually harassing' a female student in Panchagarh while a girl 'gang raped' in Sherpur and a schoolboy arrested in Sylhet for allegedly violating a schoolgirl, demonstrating that the vulnerabilities of girls are growing across the country, reports UNB. According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, an assistant teacher of Boda Pilot High School in Boda upazila of Panchagarh has been suspended for six months on charge of sexually harassing a schoolgirl on August 26.

The teacher, Abdur Razzak Raju, has also been banned from entering the school premises and asked to explain his position within seven days, said Rabiul Alam Subol, headmaster of the school.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the school managing committee and teachers.

A five-member probe body has been formed to look into the matter, and action will be taken against the teacher if he is found guilty following the probe report, the headmaster added.

As claimed by the victim, a Class-IX student of the school, Raju sexually harassed her when she went to his house for tuition on August 26 as she was alone at that time.

Later, her parents informed the matter to the headmaster and submitted a written complaint to the local MP, deputy commissioner, police super and UNO, demanding exemplary punishment of the teacher.

Syed Mahmud Hossain, UNO of Boda upazila, said necessary action will be taken against the accused teacher following the investigation.

In Sherpur, a Class-VII student was allegedly violated by three young men at Rouha Kalapara village in Sadar upazila on Sunday night.

Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said a case was filed with the police station while the alleged rapists --Shakil Miah, 20, son of Abdul Miah, Masud Miah, 19, son of Bachchu Miah, and Shipon Miah, 20, son of Aynal Haq--went into hiding after the incident.

He said the trio waylaid the girl around 8:30pm while she was returning home from the house of a neighbouring student.

They took her to a bamboo cluster and raped her in turns, the OC said.

Meanwhile, Ruhul Amin, a Class-X student and son of Master Abdur Razzak of Rajaganj village in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet, was arrested from his residence on Sunday for reportedly violating a schoolgirl.

The victim filed a case with Kanaighat Police Station on June 20 over the rape. Ruhul had been on the run since the filing of the case.
