“All I can say is that boys have done reasonably well against higher-ranked sides at Asiad and hopefully we can repeat that performance and we can win games,” Jamie Day, head coach of the Bangladesh national football team told the reporter yesterday after a practice session at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Meanwhile, it’s just one day in hands to kick off the SAFF Championship when the Bangladesh national football team coach finally selected his 20 men squad for the tournament and had the first practice session with final squad yesterday.

The English coach has a preliminary squad of 27 men including the Udner-23 youth team, who played in the Asian Games, had three months time to prepare the team to choose players for the SAFF and team had the opportunity having conditioning camp in Qatar and South Korea but he (coach) could not make his final selection of 20 players for the SAFF.

Jamie formed his 20 man squad keeping maximum player of national youth team, played in the Asian Games and included 7 senor players, experienced playing for national side for a long but a question was come about exclusion of youngster Zafar Iqbal.

Zafar Iqbal could not draw the attention of Jamie when the young booter performed well in the SAFF Under-18 Championship in Bhutan, Jamie’s answer was – About Zafar Iqbal “I saw him last few days, Zafar has done well but unfortunately for me, I just think we have got better options, who can play as front line like Saad, Rony, Sufil. We only need one-man as striker, so we don’t need 4-5 strikers. We have players who compete in that position. Zafar is unlucky that he didn’t make it 20 but chance will come for him again as we have Bangabandhu Gold Cup in October.”

About the poor scoring ability in the team, Jamie said, “Yes there is scoring problem, no, there is no specialist scorer, I have told before but you can’t change things in 10 days. The issue came before, because we have seen foreign players played in the league in the up front, and they fielded in changing. “But what we have got young players, prepared to put themselves in goal scoring opportunities. We hope when they get the opportunity they will take them.”

“Eventually everyone will have to contribute. We need to score goals from set-pieces, that is important. The back-four should have the capability to compete in attacking, the midfield also showed they can score. So everyone has to play their part. We can’t rely on one center-forward.”

About expectation in the tournament Jamie said, “Expectation is always to win trophy but we haven’t won a competition for 15 years. I know the reason of high expectation that is the Asian Games raised the hope, it is big tournament, all are excited, players are also excited.”

About overall ability of the team Jamie said, “Yes, we have the ability, so all I can say the group of boys we have got can go as far as possible, but there are all better teams in the tournament than us. That’s the fact. But we have a group of young players who are willing to win, they are able to win games. All I can say is that boys have done reasonably well against higher-ranked sides at Asiad and hopefully we can repeat that performance and we can win games.”

About the tiredness for longtime practice whether the players would feel fatigue, said, “Boys have only had three days off in four months. So mentally and physically, there might be little bit fatigue.”
