Bangladesh’s campaign ends

Bangladesh finished their Asian Games campaign without winning any medal when they participated in 14 disciplines making room in the knockout stage of football were the best success.

Bangladesh completed their Asian Games mission with 7-0 defeat to South Korea in men’s hockey yesterday in Jakarta.  Eventually Bangladesh finished sixth in the ten nations event.

Bangladesh, who has been taking part in the Asian Games from 1978, returned home without winning medal after 32 years when they won first medal in 1986 Games with boxer Mosaraf Hossain win the first bronze medal and since then they won at least a medal in each occasion before this time.

However, to clinch the sixth position in hockey was the other notable event as Bangladesh did the expect the result while Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) focused on three events shooting, archery and kabaddi where from they expected medals before the contingent leaving Dhaka for Jakarta, disappointed all.

Meanwhile, a total of 163 officials including 117 athletes and other 15 members accompanied the contingent went to Jakarta but all returned home with empty hands.  

Football was the only event of 14, Bangladesh took part was out of the list of BOA to make any good result but it was the first time in the story of Bangladesh football qualifying in the second round when they conceded 3-0 defeat to Uzbekistan, drew 1-1 against Thailand, beat Kazakhstan 6-1 and defeated Qatar by 1-0 and finally eliminated after being defeated by North Korea by 1-3.

Bangladesh participated in athletics, archery, basketball, bridge, football, golf, hockey, kabaddi (men), Kabaddi (women), swimming, weightlifting, wrestling, shooting, beach volleyball and rowing.
