with Philippines and Laos

Hosts Bangladesh was drawn in the Group B featuring with Philippines and Laos when a colourful draw ceremony of fifth edition of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football tournament was held at a hotel in the capital yesterday.

This time six teams, including Bangladesh and five teams from other five zones of AFC are taking part in the tournament. Apart from the hosts and the defending champions Nepal, four other teams are new in the only international tourney in Bangladesh.

However, the draw ceremony was held with a party mood when the acting ambassador of Nepal Dhan Bahadur Oli and the ambassador of Palestine Yusuf Ramadan attended the occasion with State Minister of Youth and Sports Biren Siker, Deputy State Minister Arif Khan Joy, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel, BFF president Kazi Mohamed Salahuddin, senior vice-president Abdus Salam Murshedi, vice-president of the BFF Kazi Nabil Ahmed, BFF executives and Fahad Karim, CEO of K Sports, the sponsor of the tournament were also present among others.

Bangladesh could not tasted the title of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International tournament since it’s inception in 1996 when Malaysia won the trophy for twice, a team from China and Nepal once each.

Group A is comprised with Nepal, Palestine and Tajikistan.  

Among the six teams in the tournament, Bangladesh hold the lowest place in the FIFA ranking with 194 when Palestine is the highest with 99, Philippines 115, Tajikistan 119, Nepal 161 and Laos 178.

Despite Bangladesh are lowest in FFIA ranking among all but they are one of the favourites in the tournament which will kick off on October 1.   

Earlier it was decided that all the group stage matches would take place in Sylhet but in the draw ceremony president of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Kazi Mohammed Salahuddin and the senior vice-president and the chairman of the local organising committee of the tournament Abdus Salam Murshedi hinted that some of the matches may take place at the Sheikh Kamal Stadium in Nilphamari.

Fahad Karim, CEO of the K Sports in his speech said that to sponsoring the tournament is not their only objective or to make profit and taking any benefit from tournament but to pay tribute to the Father of Nation and to support the Bangladesh Football Federation for the development of soccer.

“In fact it is not our intention to make any profit or take benefit with sponsoring the tournament, but I think it is our privilege and great pleasure to have the involvement with this tournament will be organised after the name of the Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

“It’s our dream to continue our endeavor to make the tournament a popular one in the football world.”
