Hasan Imam, Ferdousi Majumdar honoured with Altaf Mahmud Padak

Veteran cultural personalities Syed Hasan Imam and Ferdousi Majumdar were awarded with the prestigious ‘Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak 2018’ for their outstanding contribution to their respective fields. To remember and pay respect to Altaf Mahmud, the Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Foundation organised a commemorative programme followed by an award ceremony on Thursday at the National Music and Dance Centre auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segunbagicha of the capital.

Noted theatre personality Aly Zaker handed over the award to Syed Hasan Imam and Ferdousi Majumdar at the event as chief guest. A crest, uttorio (celebratory scarf) and an amount of ten thousand taka were received by the award recipients. Presided over by Altaf Mahmud’s wife Sara Ara Mahmud, the programme was also attended by Nasiruddin Yusuff, Shimul Yusuff and others.

Syed Hasan Imam said, “Altaf Mahmud was senior to me in age, but he was like a friend to me. Paying tribute to freedom fighter Altaf Mahmud, I am considering this award prestigious and feeling honoured upon receiving this. Although, Ekushey Padak and Swadhinata Padak (Independence Award) are very prestigious award, but the Altaf Mahmud award bears the connection to the people of Bangladesh. I am grateful for getting this award dedicated to my favourite person.”

Ferdousi Majumdar said, “The music of Altaf Mahmud was internationally-acclaimed. He never truly left us, he is living among us through his creation. His superiority as a musician can be truly seen with his noted rendition ‘Amar Bhai Er Roktey Rangano Ekushey February’. All of his song touch hearts, which is very rare for a musician. The legacy of Altaf Mahmud will sustain as long as Bangladesh stays on the map. In honour of his memory I am truly happy to receive this award.”

At the beginning of the programme, Altaf Mahmud was remembered through musical performance. Artistes of Udichi rendered several songs tuned by  Altaf Mahmud including ‘Ghumer Deshe Ghum Bhangate’, ‘Ami Manuser Bhai Spartacus’ and ‘Rastrobhasa Andolon Korli Bangali’.

To note, Altaf Mahmud (December 23, 1933– September, 1971) was a musician, cultural activist and martyred freedom fighter of the Bangladesh Liberation War. During a combing operation (on August 30, 1971) in Dhaka by the Pakistan army, Mahmud was arrested and believed to have been killed in September of that year.

Altaf Mahmud was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1977. He was given the award for his contribution to Bengali culture and Bangladesh Liberation War. In 2004, he was posthumously awarded the Independence Day Award for his special contribution to Bengali culture. l
