‘Drug trader’ hurt in gunfight

Lalmonirhat: A suspected drug trader sustained bullet injuries in a reported gunfight with police in Aynarpul area of Aditmari upazila early Thursday, reports UNB. The injured was identified as Shah Alam, son of Sayfal Miah of Shalmara Mohammadpur area of the upazila. Tipped off that a gang of drug dealers was staying in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there in the early hours, said Masud Rana, officer-in-charge of Aditmari Police Station. Sensing the presence of police, the gangsters opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate that triggered a gun battle, he said. After the gunfight, bullet-hit Shah Alam was found lying on the ground. Later, police arrested him and took him to Aditmari Health Complex under their custody.

Housewife tortured to death

Shariatpur: A housewife was tortured to death allegedly by her in-laws at Charmalagao village in Damudya upazila on Thursday morning, reports UNB. The victim was identified as Papia, 22, wife of expatriate Liton Chowkidar of the village. Deceased’s family members said Papia, daughter of Bhavatos Gannito of Gosairhat upazila, married Dubai expatriate Liton Chowkidar of Damudya upazila around three years back. Liton is now in Dubai. They have a two-year-old daughter. The family members used to torture Papia physically after marriage, they alleged. Father Bhabotos Gannito said he came to know from a neighbour over aphone call—“if I want to see my girl, then come to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital as her girl was admitted there with a critical condition.” On information, “I rushed to the hospital and found my girl in the morgue. The family members of her father-in-law have tortured to death, my girl. I want the capital punishment of the murder,” he demanded. Dr TofailAhmed, duty doctor of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, said Papia was taken to hospital as a dh condition. Being informed, police rushed in and sent the body to hospital morgue for autopsy, the doctor added. Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Damudya Police Station, said the mystery of the death would be clear after having autopsy report. Primarily, it is assumed that the girl might have killed after pouring poison. No hurt spot found in victim’s body. Victim’s family informed that they would file complainant, the OC added.

96 people arrested in Satkhira

Satkhira: In a drive from Thursday night to yesterday morning, police arrested 96 people from different parts of the district on various charges, reports UNB. They arrested 22 people from Sadar, eight each from Kalaroa and Tala upazilas, 11 from Kaliganj, 18 from Shyamnagar, 20 from Ashashuni, four from Debhata and five from Patkelghata upazilas, said Azam Khan, an inspector at the Special Branch of Satkhira Police. He said 13 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir were among the arrestees. Police also recovered 582 pieces of Yaba pill during the drive, Azam added. According to him, the arrestees are accused in cases like acts of sabotage and drug abuse.

Elderly man, granddaughter found dead in Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar: An elderly man and his granddaughter, who went missing on Wednesday, were found dead in a fish enclosure along the Naf River in Teknaf upazila yesterday, reports UNB. The deceased were identified as Yusuf Ali, 75, and his granddaughter Rozina Akter, 10, daughter of Abdul Malek of the upazila. Spotting the floating bodies of Yusuf and Rozina at Hoaikhan Unsiprang Jhimongkhali along the river, local people informed police about it in the morning, said Pronoy Chakma, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). Later, a special team of police from Huaikang police camp recovered the bodies with the help of border guards around 8:30 am. Yusuf along with Rozina went to the area with their cattle and they remained missing since then, the UNO said. It is not still clear how the tragic incident happened.

2 held with 100kg hemp

Brahmanbaria: Members of Narcotics Department in a drive arrested two people along with 100 kgs of hemp from islampur in Bijoynagar upazila on Thursday, reports UNB. The arrestees were identified as Manna Mia, 41, son of Mantu Mia of Islampur village, and Jamal, 18, son of Yusuf Ali of Char Islampur village in the upazila.
