Steps taken for registration of poultry farmers

BSS

RAJSHAHI: Steps have been taken to bring all the poultry farmers and feed sellers under registration aims at ensuring safe and good poultry farming practices for sound public health, reports BSS. Department of Livestock Services (DLS) has taken the decision at a meeting with district and upazila level DLS officials, poultry farmers and other stakeholders. Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) organised the meeting at Paba Upazila DLS office on Thursday afternoon in association with an issue-based project titled ‘Food Safety Governance in Poultry Sector in Bangladesh’, UKaid and British Council.

Chaired by District Livestock Officer (DLO) Dr Zulfikar Akhter Hossain, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Upazila Livestock Officer Ismail Haque, Veterinary Surgeon Dr Khandaker Sagar Ahmed, Poultry Farmer Moina Begum, Feed Seller Rejaul Karim, CAB Field Coordinator Omor Decosta and Field Officers Mohidul Hassan and Mozammel Haque.

The experts unanimously said ensuring a good poultry farming practice is very important for sound public health. Utmost emphasis should be given to bringing all the poultry farmers, traders, feed manufactures, sellers and others concerned under necessary training to enhance their awareness in this regard.

Dr Zulfikar Akhter Hossain gave an overview of the region’s poultry sector. He puts forward a set of recommendations to make the poultry sector safe and hygienic. He said the role of farmers and retailers is very important to ensure feed safety with resisting high-powered antibiotics use in it.

Dr Akhter Hossain opined that using high-powered and overrated antibiotic in poultry feed is harmful to public health. So, time has come to look into the matter with utmost emphasis.
