Bangladesh shock Qatar to advance into last 16

An eleventh hour strike from captain Jamal Bhuiyan steered Bangladesh to grab a crucial solitary goal win against Qatar to advance into the last 16 of the ongoing Asian Games football yesterday at the Patriot Chandrabaga Stadium, Jakarta Palembag. It is the first time Bangladesh could make a place in the last 16 in their Asian Games history since its debut in 1978. The  underdogs Bangladesh team outshined the day’s favourites and one of the Asian powerhouse Qatar when Jamal Bhuiyan slotted home the all important goal of the match just in the second off the off four minutes added time.

possessions but were ahead in opening scoring chances when they created at least five opportunities and made a perfect utilize from one of those when two were very closer, in this respect Bangladesh earned the deserving victory.

The match was onset with Bangladesh went on attack through the right side and Mahbubur Rahman Shufil, who scored one goal in against Thailand in the previous match, entered into the box but the forward fired his right footer out the post when it was very good chance for him to lead the team on eighth minute.

Despite missing the first chance, Bangladesh kept up their attacking approach and again went closer just eight minute later this time also Shufil squandered the opportunity when striker chased a marker on his way going into the danger area and solo opened the space to have the Qatar goalkeeper one on one situation.

But the Qatari custodian was very sharp to advance to close the gap with the striker and Shufil failed beat him, as he shot the ball straight to keeper’s hand.

Qatar getting rid from two unexpected assaults from Bangladesh tried hard to bounce back and also put Bangladesh into immense pressure but could not open any open any real chance to score goals.

Bangladesh could have taken the lead on 38th minute but this time also the goalkeeper of Qatar make a brilliant save when Topu Barman took a good header on a Jamal Bhuiyan corner and another effort of Biplu Ahmed was also saved by goalkeeper.  

When the match was heading to a goalless draw, captain Jamal Bhuiyan broke the deadlock rolling the ball into the bottom left corner off a Masuk Meah Jony (1-0).
