The Independent gives highest coverage to climate issues

The country’s leading daily, The Independent, has given the highest coverage to climate issues in 2017, according to a resport. The report, prepared by the Network on Climate Change, Bangladesh (NCCB) Trust, a development organisation, shows that The Independent has published 543 reports on environment-related issues, of which 137 stories are on climate change and natural disasters.

Md Shah Alamgir, director-general of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), unveiled the cover of the report at a function at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU). NCCB co-coor dinator Mizanur Rahman Bijoy was in the chair.

The NCCB prepared the report after the compilation of reports published in five leading dailies—The Independent, Daily Star, Prothom Alo, Kalerkantha and Janakantha—last year.

According to the report, The Independent also published 103 stories on forests and the environment, 30 on power and energy, 194 on river and water resources and 79 on food and agriculture.

The Daily Star published 645 reports, of which 98 were on climate change and natural disasters while it published the highest number (of 240 reports) on rivers and water resources. Prothom Alo published 388 stories, of which 84 were on climate change and natural disasters. It published the highest number of 123 reports on forests and the environment. Kalerkantha has given the lowest coverage, with 70 stories on climate change and natural disasters out of 362 stories, observed the report.

Speaking at the function, Alamgir called upon the media to play a more active role in reporting the impacts of climate change. He said the PIB would take further initiatives to impart expert training to journalists who cover climate change issues.

Bangladesh Climate Change Forum president Kawser Rahman, former DRU vice-president Rafiqul Islam Azad and others also spoke on the occasion.
