Cattle trafficking on the rise ahead of Eid

Sunamganj: Trafficking of Indian cattle and drugs across the international border are said to be on the rise at the Chanpur and Takerghat points in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj, reports UNB. Locals speaking on condition of anonymity said asuch trafficking had previously abated at these two points, but recently it has reared up again ahead of Eid ul Azha, although the Company Commander of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) denied the allegation.

Some of the locals said some members of BGB were involved with the trafficking taking bribes from the traffickers. In the face of threats to remain silent, none of the locals felt emboldened to protest the matter. Witnesses said trafficking of cattle, liquor, Indian limestone, fish, hen, oil, eggs, and mobile Sims was on in full swing at Borunga Chora of Rajani line in Tekerghat and Baragof Tila, Pagla chora points of Chanpur border.

No patrolling teams of BGB were seen at the trafficking spots, witnesses said. Meanwhile, Captain Lieutenant Colonel Abli Ehsan of BGB Battalion 28 said limestone was being imported legally through Tahirpur, which is the only point at which the border is not secured with barbed wire, which is not supposed to allow any chance for trafficking. Even so, they will investigate the allegations, he added.
