Ensuring justice for victims of violence

Experts and women rights activists at a round table titled “Judicial System for Women: Bangladesh Perspective” in the capital on Saturday urged for amending necessary acts to remove legal loopholes and sanctioning budget for more judicial courts to ensure justice for violence against women. Due to the legal loopholes and leniency in judicial process, the final verdicts are often delayed resulting in distrust among the victims towards the judicial system, they observed. Faulted medical reports, post mortem reports, corruption are also the reasons behind the justice being delayed.

It is lamentable that while a cross-section of people are campaigning against violence on women and children, such incidents are going on in the country. There are people who harbour the attitude that there is no harm in beating their wives and children and physically or verbally abuse them on the flimsiest of pretexts. Most of the women dare not protest and bear the brunt of the repression perpetrated on them silently. Patriarchs and religious leaders are also against women raising their voice against repression. There are husbands and in-laws who browbeat housewives into submission and the latter have little scope to disoblige them. This sinister tendency is not confined to the poor and illiterate sections of the society but has spread its tentacles among the middle class, upper middle class and higher echelons of the society.

Housewives have to appease their husbands and the members of their families. Any kind of lapse on their part is taken seriously and they become victims of maltreatment. This is very unfortunate; this outlook must change. A culture of mutual respect should grow. Heads of families, husbands or fathers should grow a culture of tolerance and forbearance in their manners and temperaments. They should realise that violence does not bring peace, it only exacerbates family troubles that may lead to disastrous consequences.

Getting justice is human rights for every citizen but how many get the same. If the leniency of the judicial process in the cases of violence against women is not solved, people and victim will lose their trust of getting justice.

Lack of social security of women does not allow them to inform police or others of their pitiable plights. Empowerment of women in a bigger way can mitigate the sufferings of the women. More judicial courts should be established for trial of women violence related cases. Adequate budgetary allocation is needed for this. Media can project the incidents of women repression occurring in remote areas of the country. Generation of social awareness can help a lot in this regard.
