No rain likely in next couple of days

Sultry weather to continue
Special Correspondent

As the heat and humid conditions continued, no relief in the form of rain is expected in the next one or two days. The mercury rose to 35.2 degrees Celsius in the capital. The day's highest maximum in the country was 36.6C in Rajshahi. It was 35.2 C at Jessore, followed by 35C in Khulna and Ishwardi, Met Office sources said. "But this is not a heat wave. That requires 36C prevailing at more than two stations," Abul Kalam Mallick, meteorologist and weather researcher, told The Independent yesterday (Friday).

Such a situation prevails when there is sunlight breaking through clouds. Something like that prevailed in the capital and elsewhere. There were clouds but they did not burst into rain, because the clouds were there with the sun blazing through them. This made us

feel the heat in a muggy condition, Mallick said.

The relative humidity was 91 per cent in the morning and 85 per cent in the  evening.

The Met Office forecast for the next 24 hours, beginning at 6pm on Friday, said light to moderate rain/thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, are likely at a few places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Chattogram divisions, and at one or two places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions, with moderately heavy falls at other places.
