Actress
Nawshaba on fresh 2-day remand

Actress Kazi Ahmed would be subjected to further custodial interrogation for two more days in a case filed under the Information, communication and Technology Act (ICT). The Dhaka metropolitan magistrate's court yesterday extended her police custody for a couple of days. Nawshaba was produced before Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Amirul Haider Chowdhury yesterday after the expiry of her four-day remand.

The investigating officer appealed for a 10-day extension for properly investigating the case. After the hearing, the court extended the remand for two days. Earlier, the police took Nawshaba in a four-day remand in a case filed by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) with Uttara West police station in the capital. The case was filed against her for spreading rumours on social media.

On August 3, while the students’ movement for safe roads was raging all over Dhaka, Nowashaba appeared on Facebook Live, claiming that four persons were killed and four females were being held at the Awami League (AL) office in Dhanmondi. She requested the viewers to save all those kept hostage at the AL office.

The video coming went viral within a short time.

However, no such thing had taken place in reality. It was found that she was only spreading rumours.

But the rumours triggered violence among the demonstrating students, who became aggressive and attacked the AL party office in Dhanmondi. This created an unsavoury situation in the area for the next two days.

Nawshaba repented for her action during yesterday’s hearing. She claimed she was overwhelmed with emotion and came live on Facebook.
