At least 17 community clinics, out of a total of 37, are in a sorry state in Sakhipur. These clinics have not been renovated for a long time.

Besides, healthcare providers and patients have been suffering for want of safe drinking water and frequent power cuts.

Sources say cracks have developed on the walls of three of these clinics.

The services of Mohanandapur, Berbari and Ratanpur community clinics are being provided in rented houses. The original buildings are not fit for use, says Mizanur Rahman, head assistant of Sakhipur upazila hospital.

Fourteen othersclinics have been running in vulnerable houses. There is no pwer connection in all the 37 clinics. The heads of tube wells have been stolen and water supply is disrupted in most of the clinics.

A community healthcare provider (CHCP), a health worker and a family welfare assistant have been appointed for providing primary healthcare services to children and pregnant women at the clinics from 9am 3pm. These employees provide medical services and advices to women, especially before and after pregnancy.

Ariful Islam, CHCP of the Mohanandapur clinic, said that most of the laptops  received from the government has gone out of order. Many of these laptops cannot be operated for lack of power supply.

A pregnant woman came to the Protima Bonki community clinic for getting healthcare services, but she                     was afraid to enter the dilapidated building.

Abu Hanif, CHCP of the Atapara community clinic, alleges that water seeps in through the cracked wall during the rainy season.

Locals have urged the authorities concerned to look into the matter and take necessary steps to create a congenial atmosphere in the clinics so that the government's plea to serve village people can be achieved.

When contacted, upazila health and family planning officer Dr Belayet Hossain said that they have prepared a list of the vulnerable community clinic buildings of Sakhipur and sent it to the district health engineering department. Community clinic buildings in Jadavpur, Berbari, Protima Bonki and Shaliar Baid will be re-constructed and 13 others repaired, he added.

Tangail executive engineer Golam Mahbub said that a list of the most vulnerable clinic buildings for repair or re-construction will be prepared and sent to the health directorate.
