Call to help create mass awareness of climate change

STAFF REPORTER, Khulna

The participants in a discussion on the “Role of media in climate change adaptation” yesterday urged the journalists to play their roles for creating mass awareness for adopting fresh plan to fight the adverse impact of climate change. They blamed rich countries for prevailing global climatic situation and suggested long-term economic and social development framework to resolve the effects of climatic change. They explained the threats posed by greenhouse effects, El Nino and La Nina to the environmental equilibrium and to plants, animals and humans. The rise of sea level and unexpected melting of ice sheets as a result of global warming would trigger frequent natural calamities such as flood and cyclone, and cause draught in arid and semi-arid regions, the discussants pointed out. A non-government organisation WINROCK International arranged the discussion meeting of Climate-Resilient Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CREL) project funded by USAID held at the conference room of of a city hotel.  Chairperson of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Rajshahi University Prof Dr Pradip Kumar Panday addressed the discussion as chief guest. Communications Manager of CREL project Obaidul Fattah Tanvir presided over the function.
